How to Identify a VTEC Oil Pump

The term "VTEC" stands for "Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control" and refers to Hondas attempt to boost the efficiency of its four-stroke internal combustion engine by altering the valvetrain. There are several engine parts that are vastly different between the VTEC and non-VTEC components, but a VTEC and non-VTEC oil pump only differ in one regard.

Instructions

    1

Remove the hexhead plug in the rear of the pump.

    2

Look in the opening where the hexhead plug was sitting. If there is a washer sitting there, you have a non-VTEC pump. If there is no washer, you either have a VTEC pump or your non-VTEC pump has been modified to work like one.

    3

Discuss with your mechanic whether or not you should upgrade to a VTEC oil pump if its time to replace the old one. The benefit with the VTEC alignment is that the plug can rest lower inside the gap and push in the relief spring further. This means that youd have to develop higher oil pressure before the bypass kicked in, improving engine performance.
