Fix It

Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench so you dont inadvertently start the engine during the removal process.

Place a wooden block on a floor jack to serve as a cushion. Position the floor jack under the oil pan and raise the jack to support the engine.

Disconnect the three vertical mount bolts on the right side of the engine with a socket wrench. Lower the floor jack and reposition it so you can raise the entire vehicle while getting access to the oil pan. Raise the vehicle with the floor jack and support it on jack stands.

Unscrew the lug nuts from the right front wheel with a lug wrench then pull off the wheel. Remove the splash shield for the drive belt with a socket wrench.

Place a wooden block on a screw jack, and position the screw jack under the oil pan. Support the engine with the screw jack and disconnect the front and rear through-bolts for the engine mount with a socket wrench.

Lower the engine with the screw jack and detach the accessory drive belts from their pulleys. Disconnect the mounting bolt for the harmonic balancer with a socket wrench.

Connect special tool 8454 to the harmonic balancer and attach insert 6827-A to the special tool. Pull the balancer from the crankshaft.

Remove as much residual gasket glue as possible using a plastic or metal scraping instrument. Be caul not to gouge the metal around where the gasket glue is being removed.

Follow the gasket glue remover manufacturers instructions and either spray the remover onto the metal surface, or apply the remover with a paint brush.

Allow the gasket glue remover to sit on the surface and loosen the material. Follow the glue remover manufacturers instructions regarding sitting time, typically 20 to 30 minutes.

Scrape the gasket glue off the surface with the gasket scraper, once the sitting time for the glue remover expires.

Repeat this process as necessary to completely remove all residual glue.

Drive the car onto a set of automotive ramps and set the parking brake. Shut off the engine and allow it to cool. Chock the rear wheels to prevent unwanted movement.

Don a pair of safety goggles and a pair of heavy work gloves. Crawl under the vehicle and locate the exhaust pipe where it routes over the rear axle. Cut completely through the pipe in this area with a hack saw.

Locate the rubber isolators that the rear section of exhaust is hanging from. Lift up on the exhaust pipe to the rear of the saw cut and slide the rubber isolators from the hooked ends of the exhaust hangers. Remove the rear section from under the car.

Loosen the bolts on the exhaust pipe clamp on the center section of the exhaust pipe with a socket and ratchet wrench. Lift up slightly on the pipe, then slide the rubber isolators on this section of exhaust off of the hooked exhaust hangers. Remove the center section from under the vehicle.

Loosen and remove the retaining nuts on the extension pipe of the exhaust at the front of the vehicle at the exhaust manifold. Lower the extension pipe and remove it from the vehicle.

Remove the bottom section. Lift up the bottom cushion at the two front corners. Two clips that hold the cushion on are now accessible and can be detached. Slide the cushion forward and out.

Remove the top section. Remove the two nuts that are located at the bottom corners of the top portion of the seat. Pull the seat so that the tabs where the nuts were can be clear of the studs. Pull the seat up and toward the front of the car so that the upper clips will become disconnected. The top portion of the seat can now be removed.

Clean up any mess. There will likely be a lot of built-up dirt and messes underneath the seat cushions. Keep some cleaning supplies handy for this.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to prevent the engine from starting during the heater case removal. Wait 10 minutes before proceeding to prevent your vehicles airbag from accidentally deploying.

Place a container below the radiator, and remove the drain plug for the radiator with a socket wrench. Allow the coolant to drain from the radiator into the container, and store the coolant for later use. Replace the drain plug for the radiator.

Detach the hoses from the heater core, and plug the open ends of the hoses with shop rags. Remove the radio console from the dashboard with a socket wrench to provide clearance for the heater case. Disconnect the cup holder.

Turn the boot for the shift lever over if your car has a manual transmission. Remove the upper cover for the select lever if your car has an automatic transmission. Detach the cover for the console with a socket wrench, and disconnect the audio assembly from the console. Detach the cable and electrical connectors for the antenna.

Disconnect the lower cover for the console with a socket wrench, and detach the electrical connector for the seat belt timer. Remove the glove compartment and the console for the instrument panel.

Remove the mounting bolts for the steering column with a socket wrench, and lower the column to the floor of the vehicle. Detach the cover for the steering column, and disconnect the opening lever for the hood. Turn the switch for the temperature control to the coldest setting, and set the mode selector switch to the defroster setting. Remove the cables for the mode selector and temperature control switches.

Detach the electrical connectors for the instrument panel. Disconnect the retaining bolts on the instrument panel and the grill for the front defroster with a socket wrench. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle, and detach the cable for the speedometer from the combination meter.

Detach the cables for the heater control, and disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the fan motor. Remove the air duct between the blower and heater with a socket wrench. Lift the heater case up and out to remove it from the vehicle.
