1992 Chevy Silverado 4X4 Troubleshooting

1992 Chevy Silverado 4X4 Troubleshooting

The 1992 Chevy Silverado 4x4 is a pickup truck that allows users to haul or tow heavy trailers or loads. If you are having problems with your 1992 Chevy Silverado, you will need an OBD (on-board diagnostic) machine to check the engine. Gaining access to an OBD machine will require you to rent one from a body shop or auto repair center. After you get the troubleshooting code from the OBD scan tool, you will be able to fix your Silverado.

Instructions

    1

Look in the footwell of the drivers side of the truck for the 16-pin plug. This runs off of the main wiring harness on the left of the fuse panel.

    2

Plug the OBD cord into the plug. Turn on the OBD machine and then turn on the ignition in the truck so that the electrical panel comes on.

    3

Press the "Start" button on your scan tool and then wait for the machine to send you a troubleshooting code.

    4

Unplug the OBD pin from the truck and then turn the truck off.

    5

Compare the code against the code explanation in your ODB erence manual to find out the problem with the engine. The erence manual comes with the machine rental. It allows you to look up the troubleshooting code for the specific reason your truck is not working properly.

The Location of the Cam Position Sensor on the 1992 Park Avenue

Before changing the camshaft sensor on your 1992 Buick Park Avenue, you must determine its location on the engine; the sensor is tucked away under the water pump, and while you can see it from the top of the engine, replacing it requires you to work under the front of the car. A replacement sensor is available from most auto parts stores or through a Buick dealership.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of your Park Avenue and locate the water pump on the front of the engine. You will see the water pump is the front-center of the engine block.

    2

Look near the base of the water pump pulley, along the bottom edge: You will see an electrical connector and harness.

    3

Follow the harness in toward the block, until you can see a small, round sensor threaded into the block--this is the camshaft sensor.

How to Reset the Code on My 1992 Cadillac

How to Reset the Code on My 1992 Cadillac

You can reset the code on your 92 Cadillac from your home garage, saving yourself time and money. The computer in your Cadillac generates and stores trouble codes that pertain to the vehicles various systems. You first have to run a diagnostic test using an OBD scanner to pinpoint the problem. After the problem has been discovered and repaired, you must reset the code using the same OBD scanner. Always fix the problem first before attempting to erase the codes or you risk further damage to your vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Pull down on the fuse panel cover from the top with your fingers. You can find it on the lower part of the drivers side dashboard. Plug the OBD scanner into the port.

    2

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position, but dont crank the engine.

    3

Select the "Delete Codes" command on the scanner. Wait for the menu to indicate the task has been accomplished. Unplug the OBD scanner.

    4

Turn on the engine and verify all service and warning lights have been turned off on the instrument panel.

How to Replace an Alternator in a 1992 Lumina 3 4

The alternator in a 1992 Chevy Lumina is what supplies the power for everything electrical in the car. The cars alternator is also responsible for keeping the battery fully charged. When the alternator goes bad, none of this happens. Your battery goes dead and you wont be able to start the car anymore. The alternator works on the principle of a magnet moving across a wire inducing current flow and voltage. This voltage and current are internally regulated to levels that are usable by your car.

Changing the alternator in your front wheel drive 1992 Chevy Lumina is a fairly easy project that anyone with the proper tools can accomplish in a couple of hours.

Instructions

Removal of Old Alternator

    1

Loosen and remove the negative battery cable from the battery, using the 5/16 wrench. Tuck it out of the way. Ensure that it wont move and make contact with the battery while youre working.

    2

Insert the square drive of the ratchet into the square opening on the tensioner pulley and pull the pulley off the serpentine belt. With the tension on the belt released, carefully pull the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley and push it out of the way. Normally, you need to turn this pulley clockwise to release tension.

    3

Loosen the two bolts that secure the alternator to the side of the engine closest to the bulkhead between the engine bay and passenger compartment using the ratchet and a 9/16 or 5/8 socket. You need to turn these bolts counter-clockwise to remove them. Set these bolts aside where you can easily reach them during installation.

    4

Lift the alternator out of its location. There will be a two wire connectors on the back of the alternator. One is a screw terminal and the other is plug. Both of these need to be removed. Squeeze the connector and pull straight out. Use a 3/8 or 10mm wrench to remove the nut securing the large single wire. Set the old alternator aside as youll need to return it for a core refund.

Installation of the New Alternator

    5

Connect the large wire to the lug labeled "BAT" on the back of the alternator and secure it with the nut and washer provided.Use the same wrench you used for removal to tighten the nut. Insert the two wire connector into the connector on the alternator.

    6

Lower the alternator into place with one hand and, using the other hand, insert the bolts and thread them in as much as you can by hand. Use the ratchet to make the bolts as tight as you can. The bolts need to be turned clockwise to install them.

    7

Route the serpentine belt back onto the alternator pulley and up to the tensioner pulley. Insert the square drive of the ratchet into the square opening on the tensioner pulley and turn clockwise to lift the pulley out of the way. Carefully slide the serpentine belt over the tensioner pulley and slowly let the spring take tension back onto the belt.

    8

Reattach the negative battery cable. Use the 5/16 wrench to tighten the terminal bolt clockwise.

How to Replace the Serpentine Belt on a 1992 Ford Ranger

Installing a new serpentine belt on the drive pulleys of your Ford Rangers engine may be necessary if the belt is showing heavy wear or damage of any kind. The belt turns all the accessories on the front of the engine. If the serpentine belt fails, the engine may overheat, causing catastrophic damage to the block, heads and internal parts of the engine. Pay close attention to the belt-routing diagram when installing the new belt to avoid damaging the new belt as you install it.

Instructions

    1

Locate the negative cable on the battery of your Ford Ranger. Remove the retaining bolt from the cable end with a wrench. Lift the cable off the negative battery terminal and isolate it away from the battery.

    2

Locate the serpentine belt tensioner on the front of the engine. The serpentine belt tensioner looks like a metal arm with a plastic pulley mounted on the end of it. Place a socket and breaker bar on the nut in the center of the idler pulley on the end of the tensioner arm. Rotate it counterclockwise to release the tension from the belt.

    3

Remove the belt from the tensioner. Rotate the tensioner back to the home position. Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and discard it.

    4

Install the new serpentine belt over all the pulleys on the front of the engine but leave it off the idler pulley. Route the belt over the pulleys according to the diagram on the radiator support.

    5

Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise. Slide the belt onto the idler pulley. Rotate the tensioner back to the home position.

    6

Install the negative cable on the negative battery terminal. Install the retaining bolt and tighten with a wrench.
